The Zhongshan Road Station Renewal Project along Qingdao Metro Line 1 represents a pioneering achievement in historic urban conservation, being the first initiative to integrate century-old architectural heritage with modern rail transit infrastructure. Covering 6,800㎡, the complex preserves the original Liyuan-style courtyard dwellings dating back to pre-1933, maintaining their characteristic spatial layout of seven courtyard units across eastern and western blocks. The design innovatively combines subway access points with heritage rehabilitation, creating a seamless transition between traditional architecture and metro facilities through material contrasts of modern glass bricks and historic red clay bricks. The architecture exemplifies classic Liyuan features: street-facing facades enclosing courtyards, mixed commercial-residential functions, and timber-brick composite structures. Exteriors maintain the German tripartite structure - rusticated granite base courses, exposed brick walls with sand-washed finishes, and traditional red-tiled pitched roofs - while incorporating Chinese decorative elements. This landmark project demonstrates successful fusion of Eastern and Western architectural traditions, establishing a new paradigm for heritage-embedded urban infrastructure development.
